Hearing Solar Winds Alight CD  $20.00

“Hearing Solar Winds Alight”  is a new take on a 25 year old classic. Originally released in 1983, “Hearing Solar Winds” was something completely new. The explorations that cumulated in “Hearing Solar Winds” began in the 1970’s. It was comprised of elements from overtone singing from Asia, the explorations of modern jazz into different tonal colors, the exciting speculations of modern cosmology into the nature of the universe and a growing Buddhist perspective. All these elements lead to a new way of singing, a new way of making music. Harmonic singing illuminates the elements of the one tone that is Creation. It is, in addition, a meditative practice and a modality for healing and understanding. It is a “gateless gate”.

The sun is the mother of us all. Everything that we are, all the energy we expend comes from the sun. In it’s upper atmosphere, the corona, where the temperature is one to three million Kelvin, the solar wind streams into the solar system. To see it, follow this link.  It bathes our earth in energy, it presses against our atmosphere and influences the weather, it can even knock out power stations. One of it’s most amazing effects is the aurora. To see it, follow this link

“Hearing Solar Winds Alight” is a special 25th anniversary edition audiophile edition of David Hykes’ legendary composition and recording  of “Hearing Solar Winds” with The Harmonic Choir. With over 300,000 “legacy” copies sold of the original album and CD, for this special edition, David Hykes revised and remastered his original audio recordings in a high-resolution 96kz digital audio environment. His deep familiarity with the music and the recordings in this new audio environment allowed him to bring into even clearer focus the extraordinarily rich, strong and magical harmonics of the voices echoing in the magnificent expanse of the Thoronet Abbey in France, where the work was recorded. This definitive edition, personally supervised by David Hykes renews the startling legacy of his “music of the spheres” for a new generation of listeners. It also features a wonderful new cover by Caterina Verde. To see more of her work, follow this link.

Harmonic Worlds is seven portraits in sound, seven modal harmonic universes. They are seven-seeded gardens. Two percussionists join in the music, Evry Mann and Bob Muller. The percussion is a perfect compliment to the singing and propels the musical explorations along.

Harmonic Meditations, released by Soundstrue, is a compendium of music from three different sources. The “Harmonic Meditations” were recorded in “the Cistern”, an empty 2 million gallon underground water reservoir in Washington state. The second source, “The Silent Ground” was performed at the re-inaugural concert at the Winter Garden atrium at the World Financial Center, destroyed by the 9/11 attacks across the street. The last source is music from the film “Travellers and Magicians” made by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. In addition to the wonderful music, the booklet contains extensive notes and gives considerable insight to the music of David Hykes.

“There is a point at which musical harmony and spiritual harmony converge”

Harmonic Meetings The pure vibrations of chant are the foundations of the sacred music of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This double CD was composed for a traveling art exhibit called “The Tent of Meeting”: see various Old Testament writings in Exodus and Hebrews. This music is an exploration of sacred sounds and syllables. There are many examples of overtone singing, which is one of the foundation of Hykes music and harmonic explorations. “It is the harmonic content of the words which interest me; singing pure vibrations and singing words is the same work. The harmonic content in a word can be brought to life; it comes from the same place as a pure vibration”

“The same eye by which I see God is the eye by which he sees me” Meister Eckart

Current Circulation In Current Circulation, David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir expand beyond the scope of the traditional tantric Tibetan Buddhist chant, in which the singer holds one steady note and one unmoving harmonic. They also expand beyond the traditional Mongolian Hoomi singing, in which the singer projects soaring harmonic melodies from the overtone series of the steady fundamental. This Cd, like Harmonic Meditations, is from three different sources, all churches. “Subject To Change” was recorded at the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York City, “Current Circulation” at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University, and “Solstice Kyrie” and “Inward Calling” Christ Church St. Laurence, Sidney, Australia.

"In relation to the reverberating whole which is the Creation, man is a kind of instrument that receives and transforms impressions--a living antenna. We must find a silence that will sensitize us to the signals which are the most essential to our growth, and we must learn to listen for them"

True to the Times finds Hykes in a trio format, joined by Peter Biffin playing dobro, Bruno Caillat playing zarb(a Persian drum). The focus of this album is on harmonic polyrhythms and singing harmonic songs. But, again as with all of Hykes’ music, the purpose is to find harmony within ourselves. But, how does one be true to the times when the times seem to lack a spiritual ground that sustains and guide us. One must be a pilgrim seeking contemplation, being and reflection,  constantly ever onward. This is music for your journey.
